Your Family Homestead at The Happy Homesteader Blog

The Happy Homesteader

Hello,

We have the wonderful privilege of now being a part of the Official Farm-Dreams Blogging community and will be posting here on Tuesdays each week. We wanted to tell all of you a little bit about ourselves and what our plans are for our Homestead and what you can expect to see here on The Happy Homesteader Blog each week.

We are a family of 4, mom and dad and two small children, currently living on a bit less than an acre. We have been making a lot of adjustments in our way of life over the past 2 years and have plans to make many more. It is our hope that by sharing the things we have learned and are learning that we can help to continue building a community here at Farm Dreams that can share additional knowledge and experiences to help all of us live a more self sufficient and sustainable life.

We have many things we are trying to focus on and want to share what we are learning about them with all of you, here are just a few:

  • Growing more and more of our own food in our organic garden
  • Raising chickens for eggs and for dinner.
  • Raising rabbits for the plate
  • Learning about the health benefits of different foods and how to incorporate them into our diet
  • Establishing an edible landscape throughout our property based on Permaculture principles
  • Building our soil by making our own compost and using the waste from our chickens, rabbits and worm bin
  • Learning skills to make the most of our harvest such as preparation and preservation
  • Starting our own bee hive for pollination and honey
  • Cutting as much as we can in our spending by producing more and consuming less in all aspects of our lives
  • Producing some of our own energy
  • Complete an online Permaculture Design Course and continue to apply the ethics and techniques we learn and share what we are learning here
  • Teaching our children as much as we can along the way so they can have knowledge and skills to live a productive and happy life in this crazy world we live in

We are also actively looking for property and a home in a more rural environment and will share some of our experiences in our search with all of you. We are looking for land that has good sun exposure, good water from a well and hopefully from an irrigation source. We want just a few acres so that we can build a food forest and have a few animals to help support our family’s needs. We’ll see how it goes.

Well, that’s a little about us. We have learned so much from this community and look forward to sharing many of our experiences with you here at The Happy Homesteader Blog. We also look forward to your comments and feedback so please feel free to tell us what you think and give us some suggestions or topics you would like us to cover.  Thank you for visiting us here and if you get a chance, swing by our website listed below. Until next week, thank you for reading.

Can't wait for next week!

I was beginning to think I was the only one here homesteading on less than an acre. The only thing we haven't done yet is rabbits for food our 3 are strictly pets. But we do raise the chickens for meat & eggs as well as turkeys, the ducks we sell thru my sister's work to others who raise &/or eat duck.and the geese well they're just here We have a neighbor that loves goose eggs for cooking.
