The Aspiring Farmer Blog

When we first moved out here we were so busy that we couldn’t even find time to visit farmer’s markets on the weekends. We were shopping at the typical grocery stores, reverting back to foods that we hadn’t purchased in years. We even shopped at Wal-Mart on a regular basis. It was a big change for us because in NY we bought almost 100% of what we ate from local farmers. It was a bit depressing to say the least. We were under a lot of pressure to get the farm up and going and we were also about 30 mins away from a farmer’s market.

But after our first few weeks we promised ourselves that we would make the time to go to a farmer’s market to buy our food. Well, we broke that promise. Over three months later and we STILL hadn’t been out on the weekends to visit a farmer’s market (the one exception was meat, we only bought from local butchers or direct from farmers). Weekends, for me, were like crunch time. Here was 48 hours where I could farm. Not like during the week where I am lucky to get a few hours at night and maybe 30 minutes in the morning. The last thing I wanted to do was spend a morning driving back and forth between a farmer’s market. But I should have.

So this past weekend we FINALLY went to Murfreesboro on Saturday and bought all our food from local farms. It was really nice to walk through the Courthouse Square with some friends and pick and choose from all the vendors. Our garden is yielding a lot of greens right now, but everything else has yet to produce, so we filled many bags. Fresh beets (with greens attached), bok choi, all the stuff you can’t find at the supermarket. We grabbed some meat too and even a chicken. We hadn’t had chicken in nearly four months. So what did we do with it?

Last night was beercan chicken time. We plucked some fresh herbs from the garden and rubbed the chicken down, even sprinkling some thyme and rosemary in the beer. Then that chicken went on the grill and we enjoyed a crispy chicken and a few local beers for dinner. It was a great way to finish a long weekend.

Did you visit a farmer's market this weekend? What did you bring home?

We went to two - got leaf lettuce and corn, watermelon, onions, tomatoes and cucumbers.
Previous weekend was green beans, new potatoes, and corn. Chicken looks yummy!

Oh man, watermelon sounds amazing right now. 100 degree heat, nothing like a cold watermelon :)
