Contemplating yard chickens?

Ask not... do I want chickens?
who wouldn't want chickens with their cartoonish characters, minimal upkeep, disposing of kitchen wastes, egg production...

But... do I want chicken poo?
who would want chicken poo... it's prolific and ever-present; it turns yards into mine fields & imposes a ban on entering the house with shoes on...

A poo management plan is a necessity and might involve setting up hen-free zones or tractoring. We attempt to embrace the poo... we're glad to have it (mostly). It is a player in the permaculture prepping of our no-till, lasagna layered garden plots.

Lasagna Garden Recipe (began in the Fall): covered lawn with cardboard in designated pattern, layered old hay, poo (& bedding straw) from coop, yard debris, occasional coffee grounds, (eventually) compost pile contents...

When the girl's are free roaming they scratch, peck, and even poo directly on the lasagna-ed areas further accelerating the process. The desired end product being fertile soil good-to-go for Spring sowing and such.
