It has been a tough summer for much of my garden, but things are starting to fruit:
My first red-ish tomato! A cherry roma.
My full-size tomatoes are growing beautifully too:
My beans have struggled and are still very small, but they are starting to flower:
More Emerald Gem melons are appearing - still no flowers from the Sakata's Sweet.
All of my pepper plants are producing! Wenk's Yellow Hots, Jimmy Nardello's, and Paprika.
I am having the worst ever infestation of squash bugs and am spraying daily with soapy water. I don't know if my winter squash will survive, but it's not looking like we will have enough time for them to ripen anyway. I'll try some earlier varieties next year - they are a challenge in our short season. The melons and yellow crookneck should be fine though. Here is my only little winter squash so far:
I am hoping to build a food dryer and dry some of them this year. I have been looking at plans for a simple solar dryer, but they are all too complicated and expenses. I used the car dashboard to dry some apricots and it worked great! But I want something that I can use even if I need to drive to town. I found a very simple plan (which I am going to modify to be a little better for my windy climate) in "DIY Projects for the Self-Sufficient Homeowner". I found it at the library the other day and am finding it a very practical book.
Oh! And I harvested my first little potatoes today! Something ate a couple of may potato plants and killed them from below, but there were some healthy potatoes down there!
