Homesteading, Organic Gardening, How to Farm, Preparedness, Self-Reliance
I had some signs printed to mount on the house so that we won't have any further issues with neighbors that move in then decided a year or two later they don't really like having a farm next door.
This land has been in the family since the late 1800's and has always had farm animals of one kind or another on it it just happens that the critters of choice for my sister & I are birds namely chickens, ducks, turkeys & one goose name Penelope, well 99% of the neighborhood love the birds and the eggs we're able to supply then you have the 1% - everything was fine the first year until they had company one day and the company decided to come visit so the kids could see the critters and see where eggs come from. From that day on it was one complaint after another to the town, it got so bad they finally had the State Dept of AG come in and do an inspection - which we passed with flying colors - a meeting was called which he never showed for so we were told the birds were his problem and no one elses.
Well so this never happens again I ordered a couple signs that now hang on the front & side of the house.
The rest of the neighbors love it!!!
If it ever stops raining I'll be getting some pictures to post of the flock.
Comment by Happy on December 11, 2011 at 1:22pm I love it! I wished you lived closer because my oldest is getting closer to the age to explain sex and each time I visit a farm I hope the whatever animals are doing the nasty.... sounds bad but it would make explaining the birds and bees alot easier.
Comment by Karen Paro on December 11, 2011 at 2:27pm Doesn't sound bad at all, that was how all of our kids learned
I had the signs made out of total frustration with a neighbor that moved here and after a year of "out of the city" living decided he didn't like having a farm next door, it smells bad.
Sometimes getting pleasure out of being a total PITA, when it's extra hot & humid I mix up a couple batches of really rank natural liquid fertilizer and spray just about every square inch of the property. The last time someone from the town paid us a visit because of his complaints about smell we told them what he was really smelling and did they laugh, they did ask me if I could cool it with the stinky stuff for the rest of the season though.
His undoing as far as the town was concerned though was when they called a meeting for everyone to sit down and try to hash things out and he blew them off twice, he's a telephone tough guy and can't say anything face to face. Everyone at town hall & the PD have been told when he calls or emails unless it's something that will impact his safety or his property IGNORE and they have for the past 2 years.
He's spent the past 6 years trying to drive us out and it just hasn't worked all he's succeeded in doing is making all the rest of the neighborhood completely dislike him, My family has been on this little piece of land since the early 30's and we have no plans on going anywhere for a long time to come, and half the neighbors have been here just as long. Of the 8 close neighbors (ourselves included) 5 are related and the properties have all been family owned starting in the late 1800's ours were the first families on this road. Our little 1/2 acre is the only active farm left but at one time all 8 of these properties were farms of one type or another.
Comment by Mrs. Knucker Hatch on December 11, 2011 at 3:00pm Fantastic signs! Esp. the part about "performing" animals. Chickens have been a natural introduction to my children as to how life begins. Of course this always leads to discussion about "Does Mommy lay an egg?".

Comment by Manoor Manor on December 11, 2011 at 11:41pm Love the signs!! So glad you have the support of your community, there have been many stories of late that did not end so well.
Comment by Karen Paro on December 12, 2011 at 12:57am Well this didn't end entirely in our favor. Because of things that happened here 20 to 30 years ago that the town can find no record of (back when somethings were done on a handshake) mom had to sign an agreement saying that we would no longer raise anything except the poultry. We always had in the past raised pigs in the winter for spring slaughter and the occasional cow & lambs and we can no longer do that (even though anyone else in town still can)but it was either that or half of us were going to be evicted and that would have created a hardship for all. But hubby has a guy that raises pigs for us and my sister's boss lets her raise a beef critter and some lambs at his place. It's just a pain to have to raise all our meat off site an hour away.
