It pays to know your cows! Today started out like any Friday. Get up, head for the day job, come home. I've been expecting Rowena to calve, so the first order of business is always to go look for her. Today there were other things to do first. While I was putting hay out, I looked up the hill, and there was rowena all by herself. She turned around, and from the looks of her tail at that distance, she'd had her calf. But there was no calf with her. When I finished with the hay, I went looking for her. I found her, and there she stood all alone - no calf. But it looked like the cleanings were hanging out under her tail. We coaxed her into the barn and called the vet. By the time he got there, nothing had changed. We put her in the chute, and he went looking for a calf. There it was, on it's side and backwards. He got the calf puller out, and after much dificult (but gentle) work, pulled a big heifer calf out. Looks like everyone is going to be alright. I would have hated it if we'd just let her go like everything was fine.
