While I see that the site only has my name on it, it's not just me.  It's me and my husband.  And here is our little story.  Form my perspective that it.

We are both New Yorkers.  No, we didn't live in the city, but neither were we up north in the country.  We're from Long Island.  If you've never heard of it, don't feel bad.  It's that little bit that sticks off of New York into the Atlantic.  The closer to the city you get, the more tightly packed the houses are.  The farther east, and you have  vineyards, farm stands, and golf courses.  We were from the middle/east end.  Still compact houses, but the occasional big yard are pine grove.

My husband and I both had aspirations of owning land.  I've wanted a garden since I was about 5.  My aunt used to let me help in hers.  My husband just wanted some space.  He had lived in closer to the city and didn't like the compact feel.  So we started looking for some property and quickly realized something.

We could never afford much. 

Long Island has some of the most ridiculous property taxes.  Unless your form Connecticut, there's not much else that can beat us.

So with a bit of a heavy heart, we headed out of New York and moved down to Virginia.  Here, not every inch of land was coveted by people wanted to put in more 65+ homes or half a million dollar cookie cutter mansions.  Here you could buy land.

As of December 2012, we got our apartment and started looking for houses with some land to it.  Course being newlyweds (3 years and going) we didn't understand the complexity of buying rural land.  We dipped our toes into the water, and ran out screaming "Too cold!  Too cold!"

After much discussions we have decided that we should take looking a bit slower.  So for now, we stay in our apartment.  And probably another year after this one, to solidify our finances.  And i feared my gardening dreams would be off until then.

Luckily I have the most wonderful friends ever.

Them knowing I was a bit bummed about my lack of gardening, for me the greatest Christmas present ever.  An apartment greenhouse. 

With this I was able to start a good bunch of seedlings and start my garden.  Which I am thrilled about!

This got me to thinking though.  What else can I fit in my little 6X 10 space?  And thus, the start of my journey.

In the time it takes us to get a house and real land, I am going to work to make my apartment the most homestead-y it can be.  I suspect many failures, but I won't know till I try them.  Let's see what we can do.
