The Country Drive

It has come to be one of my favorite things about living in the country.  While it might be considered a bit wasteful right now with current gas prices and with New York and New Jersey still struggling after Hurricane Sandy,  we still can't help but jump on a road and go...somewhere.

It started as a way to view the neighborhood.  We didn't know the area.  Overall, we were still pretty new to Virginia.  So why not take a look around?  On weekends, we stared taking different …

Animals, Animals, Animals

October should be known as Animal month.  With all the fairs and shows that go on, I was in little animal paradise.  Well not little animals.  Most of what we saw was huge.  Cow, horses, even the lamas seem much bigger when you're standing just on the other side of a suddenly thin gate.  I mean look at those…

5 Months Later

Well I've just reminded myself that I am terrible at keeping a blog.  I had great plans to write on a bi-weekly basis of what we, my husband and I, are doing to get our dream farm going.  Looking back at the blog now, I see 5 months of silence.  Yep, that's me...

Now we haven't been sitting around doing nothing for these five months.  Just nothing very farming.  So I kept putting off typing anything.  So why start now?  Two reasons: First, I see if I don't get back into…

As the Ink Drys

I have just finished a glass of apple cider, sitting on the back deck of our new dream.  We sat in silence for a bit listening.  All we could hear were birds.  Closing my eyes now I can still here them.

We signed the final papers for our dream farm.  A relatively new house sitting on 21 acres of recently timbered land.  We started the first steps today by changing all the locks and pulling out the carpets.  It was two hours of knee braking (carpets hurt).  We had some…

Quick Thoughts

Ten days ago, we had the opportunity to buy a house on 21 acres.  Today, I sit with the official loan papers on my desk.  They say yes, you can have your farm.

Suddenly it is all sinking in that we can do this and it is amazing.  My husband and I walked around hardware stores and farming stores today just looking at all the stuff we'll need soon.  It felt wonderful.

Looking at floor and paint samples.  The prices of tools and what we'll really need as apposed to what…

Stranger Things...

I had come to accept my current situation.  That buying a house was pricy, especially when you want acreage.  That a balcony garden was all I'd have for a year.  But one day, we would have our own bit of own land to garden, have goats and chickens.  Well the universe saw things differently.

While not seriously looking, my husband and I still check the housing market on that 'in case' moment.  The 'in case' has just put us into contract on 21 acres with a nice, and livable,…

Why I (Want to) Farm

I, like many of you, have those friends that don't don't understand why I want to farm.  They don't get why'd I'd want to take care of chickens and goats, spend the afternoon laying down pounds of compost, or stand over an stove all day making jam.  I just had one of those moments that I feel summarizes, for myself, all those reasons.

I work in a lab the medical field.  Everyday, I see 3000 samples come through that I use for various tests.  When I look, at the end of my day,…

An Apartment Garden: Step 1...

How do you start an apartment garden?  The same way you start a larger garden.  Get some dirt, some seeds.  Add water, sunlight and time.  Then presto!  Little green life has started up at a little of your guidance.

Yet for something so simple, few of us seem to do it.  Is it the mentality of living in an apartment?  The feeling that since we're not staying here, we should try.  Instead, we'll just wait until we've found our place to settle into.  If so, we are wasting good…

About Us

While I see that the site only has my name on it, it's not just me.  It's me and my husband.  And here is our little story.  Form my perspective that it.

We are both New Yorkers.  No, we didn't live in the city, but neither were we up north in the country.  We're from Long Island.  If you've never heard of it, don't feel bad.  It's that little bit that sticks off of New York into the Atlantic.  The closer to the city you get, the more tightly packed the houses are.  The…
