"Strengthening our Nature Connection through Self-Reliance"
Wild Wanderings Blog – August 30, 2012
Hello once again my fellow farm dreamers. Many apologies for my long hiatus:) I sincerely hope that all of you are experiencing a state of heightened prosperity. After all...it has been an interesting year indeed. Our global political and financial Ponzi scheme continues to reveal itself, to the masses, as the hot stinking turd it simply is. Yes, yes, I know... I usually don't discuss such…

Helping our children to start life learning
Helping our children to start life learning
Unschooling, homeschooling or life learning are a big challenge to many families. Especially when you have started out with sending a child to public school and then changing to a home school or un school based or life learning way of education.
We started out with a charter school for our first child and tried the art, music, and other classes to feel like we were in the the education system but not…

Being Happy On The Homestead
The Happy Homesteader
One of the life lessons that has taken me awhile to figure out and is still a bit of any issue for me is this... There is a rather big difference between enjoying a certain activity or a certain experience and that of being truly happy. The truth of that fact applies to just about every aspect of life.
For example, spending too much on the credit cards brings enjoyment and pleasure while doing the shopping…

Turning a Lawn Into A Garden
The Aspiring Farmer Blog
This is something we probably should have "googled" before we got started. But we didn't. More and more that seems to be the case, and I'm proud of us for that. Back when we first moved out here (and a long time prior to moving) we'd pretty much "google" everything we did. Just to be sure our idea wasn't completely insane and/or wouldn't kill us. Now we're a little more comfortable and kind of free-wheel it a…

Since my last post, our life has been in the fast lane regarding the place we found. We went to look at it a second time and then on Monday of this past week we were ready to put in our first offer. Then the real estate agent said "we need a copy of your pre-approval". So I had to contact our banker and get that going. Monday turned into Friday and then he emailed it to us. we were so excited we had been pre-approved for the loan.
We submitted the offer Friday night and the…

Bread Baking That Fits Into a Farmer’s Schedule
The Aspiring Farmer Blog
After just over five months on the farm we’re slowly chipping away at providing the day-to-day essentials for ourselves. By day-to-day essentials, of course, I mean things like bread and beer. Baking and brewing are two things I’ve taken to doing on nights and very early mornings when I have a little bit of free time. Until a neighbor dropped by with a book on breadmaking we were still eating stale baguettes…

Get Your Processed Food Fix
The Happy Homesteader
I must admit, before moving to my homestead my diet was pretty much all American. As our concerns grew about what we were putting into our bodies, we decided that growing our own food was the best choice. Hence the homestead! I remember the first year here wondering if we would really be able to do it. Failures in the garden and seemingly endless time frames to when we would actually process any meat…

I had always envisioned a certain "look" for our place because I had seen what I wanted as we drove country roads. I wanted a nice pasture with a tree line across the back. That probably sounds odd because most pastures do have tree lines somewhere, but my husband knew what I meant because every time I saw it when we were out riding on the Harley or out with the family, I would point it out and say how pretty it was.
Well, this weekend, when we went to look at the latest place in…

Health Benefits Of Choosing Organic
I have had this discussion with many people. We try to eat as healthy as possible as a family and we choose Organic products if at all possible. Not everyone understands this decision and question why it is even important at all. Organic produce and meats are often more expense than the other products that are…

Jewelweed and Poison Ivy - "A Perfect Pair"
Wild Wanderings Blog – August 2, 2012
Summer is a time for family picnics and various outdoor adventures and pursuits. Not much can rival cooling off in a cold mountain stream or lake on a hot, muggy Summer day. Camping is a favorite of many this time of year. Sleeping under the stars is one of the many things I enjoy, though I admit...mosquitos aren't among my favorites. Oh, and did I mention yellow jackets? Yeah, they're pretty…
