Hi folks,I had a related post a few days ago about finding poults and several people mentioned that certain breeds of heritage turkeys are more (or less) aggressive than others.  I'm new to turkeys…Continue

Finding turkey poults

I have a small farm in Maryland and will be adding heritage breed turkeys this spring.  I'm going to start small, maybe 10 or so turkeys, but my problem is that the hatcheries I've called all ship…Continue

I had a great experience finding Bourbon Reds on Craig's List by searching in rural areas nearby.  The person had hatched the birds on her rural property and they were very healthy birds ideal for our area which has very HOT summers. …

Daisy, would you consider writing an article/blog post about how to manage a breeding flock of heritage turkeys? What do they eat? how much room do they need? Housing? Roosts & Nests? I'm sure I would find it…

I would try ordering from Blue Sky. I got very nice Red Bourbon and Sweetgrass Turkeys from them. They have breeders from Porter's stock.

We're fans and breeders of Midget White turkeys. We brought them onto the farmstead originally to help control the endless waves of grasshoppers we have out here in the Nebraska panhandle. We start the poults our in the garden as soon as they…

No, it's not wood from the property, unfortunately.  I have 3 cherry trees standing tall (that will stay standing!) but otherwise no real interesting wood.  These slabs came from a really cool, local hardwood store…

Wow! So beautiful! I just read an article about building and installing wood countertops and your table is making me giddy :) Is the wood from your land? I'd love to learn more about how you harvested the boards if yes.

I ordered 15 poults this past summer.  Some arrived dead and I lost one.  Now I have 10:  3 Narragansett gobblers, 1 bourbon red gobbler, 2 narragansett hens and 4 bourbon reds.  They co-exist very well together and mingle with…

I've raised the Black Spanish... and can't honestly say why I still don't have them.  I suspect it's because they ones I got weren't fertile (I don't belame it on the breed, just where I bought them from... I…

This is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for--the "unofficial" research that comes only from experience.  I'd like to ensure a smooth adventure as much as possible (so as to ensure I'm inspired to do it again…

We've raised heritage turkeys for several years now and have raised lots of Bourbon Red, Standard Bronze, Black Spanish, Chocolates, Narragansetts, White Holland and some Blue Slate.  There's no right answer to the question of the…

We also found the Narragansett to be aggressive.  They never were to people, but the toms would fight each other to the death.  Also, they would pick on the smaller breeds, like the Bourbons.  We stopped raising that breed.  Too…

Your probably right, cutting it close for Thanksgiving, but they should be ready for sure for Christmas (where there are still plenty of people buying)... saying that, but Thanksgiving and Christmas the stores run the specials where the turkey is…

Hmm.  I did get Narragansetts, along with Bourbon Reds, 8 of each.  Maybe I'll switch them all to Bourbons if Cackles will let me.  I wonder if Porters (who I've heard great things about from many) would be big enough by…

For good heritage turkeys, I use Porter's Rare Heritage Turkeys (http://www.porterturkeys.com/index.htm ).  I've bought from them several times, and they guarantee live arrivals (and stand behind it!)

A couple of years ago, Ideal suggested having a couple of chicks with the poults.  When I did that I went from a 80 percent not live, to a 75 percent (actually higher) that did.  I think the chicks teach the poults how to eat and drink).
