We're just getting started in homesteading, but with one of us still working in the corporate world to pay the bills. We bought a 30 acre farm with perimeter fencing (in need of repair), a barn (in…Continue

"Is the manasota site free? I know I can buy time from lawyers and accountants, but I thought I'd try here for some free advice.  That's what this site is for, right? "

"I am also a huge advocate for buying an hour of time from both a laywer and an accountant.  I promise you, you will save more money in the long run than if you don't!  A laywer can give you expert advise in how to set up your business…"

"The dairy is now open again, I believe. Good point was made however. It is wise to purchase only local food (within 50 to 100 miles at most). I feel badly for folks in states where raw milk is illegal, but I also believe it is up to those people to…"

"I blogged about the raw milk situation in December: http://www.homegrownandhandmadethebook.com/2011/12/whats-so-bad-about-raw-milk.html In most cases like this, the dairy farm is shut down. And yes, there is testing available, which is how some…"

"As was pointed out in the article - food can make you sick.  Any food.  Raw or processed.  They pointed out that 200 people were sick in a certain amount of time from raw milk.  What they didn't point out is how many people…"

"It is clear in this case that you could buy milk at the farm store or miles away. Either way you could have gotten sick. I buy local cream on top milk. I don't care if that milk is a store 80 miles away or at the farm. It is the same milk. A…"

"Here is my opinion as a raw milk consumer.   Never buy raw milk unless you are buying it from the farm directly."

"Just putting in my two cents. But I would never buy from a producer that sold milk in more than their own local area (maybe 50 miles.) In my opinion, someone that can ship or deliver milk over that wide an area is too large for a sustainable RAW…"

"One way to approach this is to treat your business (the farm) separate from your personal life.  You'll be doing that to some degree by creating an LLC so that's a good start. Regarding cash, think of it this way.  You as an…"

We're just getting started in homesteading, but with one of us still working in the corporate world to pay the bills. We bought a 30 acre farm with perimeter fencing (in need of repair), a barn (in need of repair), a pool house (with a garden where the pool used to be), and a rent house (in need of paint and new carpet).  We just started up a couple of bee hives this past falls and are boarding a couple of horses.  We figured we should create an LLC to protect our personal assets, but most of…See More
