Hi Bob thanks I really like to work in the garden and hopefully this year we will have a bumper crop. We had to spray the tomato for the green horn worm last night, the corn is soaring. Do you have a garden?       Ellen

Sure do have a garden.....check out some of my photos.  Busy as a beaver out there every day.  Glad to here those potato peals are working.  We end up with potatoes everywhere each year.  Your place is looking really nice.

Thanks Bob, I looked at your picture very nice raised beds. Every day in the garden is correct that is where I want to be. We picked a gallon of green beans last night and a gallon of blue berries, some hot peppers and some banana peppers. My son in law had to do some minor surgery on a hen had an abscess, thank God for sharp pocket knifes. This is the hen he worked on    Ellen

Got a late start on beans, they are just starting to climb.  You must be in a warmer area than us, our blueberries are still several weeks off.

Hi Bob I live in north east Georgia about 20 miles from Athens Georgia. We didn't have a winter and started planting March 17 first potato's then in April about 10 tomato plants then the middle of April the green beans and the first batch of corn. So we have only had one real danger of frost it was early April and we covered all of our tomato plants with empty 5 gallon buckets and they all survived. Yeah we got a real early start this year because last year was a loss, only cucumbers made it. Not this year it is going to be a bumper crop I can see it already all the canning we will be doing. Even the jack beans are soaring        Ellen

We are not far from you either only at a higher elevation.  We covered  our blueberry bushes twice this spring to avoid heavy frost and covered many other plants also.  We bought a new German crock last year while in Ohio from Leyman's.  Made 20 liters of sauerkraut and our now starting pickles in the crock.  We also can and freeze a lot of food each year.  My favorite is picking black berries and making jamb.  Yep another year of hard work that provides such rich rewards.  some just don't see the zen in it all......

Hi Bob never a truer word spoken every one seems to be in a hurry, it is a throw away society. People are only interested in something quick no work involved, I only hope they can make it in this world when all their computers and lap tops don't work and we are back to the basic way of living. I live for the garden and the canning and just watching every thing grow, in the winter or suppose to be cold weather enjoying the vegetables and the fruits from the garden. We now have four area's with corn staggered it so it wouldn't all come on at once easier for the canning and freezing. How do you make pickles in a crock?      Ellen

Ellen we use Harsh Gairtopf German Fermenting crocks for pickles.  We ferment them in brine...the old fashion way.  Lots of recipes on line....its quick and easy.  We store our crocks of fermenting vegetables in a cool dark location here at the house.  You can also use open top crocks.  Zen pickles who would of guessed.

3 lbs. pickles
4 1/2 c. water
1 1/2 c. white vinegar
1/2 c. canning salt
1 tsp. alum
1 tbsp. dill weed
2 cloves garlic

Hi Bob thanks for sending the recipe will have to look for a crock. I spent seven years in Germany but don't remember the pickles. Was always working and had to children to take care but really enjoyed Germany, they have the best beer also   Ellen

Sorry about your squash, seems to happen here every year also.  No better beer than the Germans and the Czechs.  Making pickles this morning to go with the beer.  My favorite beer bar none is Herolds from the czech republic, darker the beer the better the steak.
