We're just about to move to our place in NS and already have a massive list of infrastructure and other things we'll be wanting and needing to do - we'll have to take it one step at a time but I'm…Continue

In just 2 months, I'll be moving to a piece of property north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Right now, very little grows on it, and even that is in scattered pockets. I will be inheriting this…Continue

Hello fellow Canadian farm dreamers! To get us started I'd love to know about your planting times - what sort of frost free dates are you working with where you are - and what (if any) crops are you…Continue

Hi,
I'm new to the group and live in Nova Scotia. We are just starting out in small farming. We have 2 female boer goats and 1 male.2 gilt pigs-Tamworth and berkshire cross and a pink one with spots, don't know what the breed in because we bought them from our daughter,They really do a good job at rooting up the ground. We have Rhode Island Red Hens and roosters of course and a few australops. We also have Khaki Campbell ducks and Emden Geese. We have also raised meat chickens for the first time this year, not sure that I like how fast they grow though.
Comment by Heather S on August 17, 2012 at 12:52pm Hi Wendy, I'm also in NS! And it sounded like reading our own story to read your's - I had to look to be sure it wasn't me, lol. We too have Tam-Berk X pigs (both gilts), but we've not moved on to much else yet beyond 5 guinea keets, 7 chicks (Barred Rocks, Speckled Sussex, and Gold laced Wyandottes), 2 hens (Barred Rocks), a barn cat, and 2 horses visiting from the neighbours. My big thing is goats and cheese but no goats planned until Spring. We've been here a whole month already! Off to maybe get some embden goslings later and a pair of Polish hens :-) I know what you mean about meat birds - we're hoping/planning to stick with roos for meat. Perhaps we'll have a chance to meet in person some day, any chance you're going to the provincial exhibition next week in Truro or to the ACORN event in Sackville on Monday?
Comment by Wendy Benjamin on August 19, 2012 at 4:52pm Hi Heather,
Wish I was going to both but no such luck.I didn't even know about the Acorn event. Must have missed reading it in the last news letter. If you get to either event have a good time for both of us.
Comment by Heather S on August 19, 2012 at 7:08pm Thanks Wendy, looks a no-go for the ACORN event as car now needs to be serviced, bummer!
