TICKS!!!!
The ticks are thick this year and our hens aren't keeping up! I've looked and found some concentrate insecticide like talstar and bayer tempo ultra sc. Anybody use any of these? Which is better? Any luck with any other products? Any info would be great! Thanks

For many years now we have used 1cc injectable ivermectin (for cattle) in our dogs. Our dogs have run of our 60 acres and come in every day covered in ticks. When tick season arrives, we know just by petting the dogs. Every tick that bites a treated dog dies and after a day or so the dogs no longer have ticks. But being tick magnets, they are able to kill many just being in the pastures.
Ivermectin is not organic, but we also dont eat our dogs, so I feel the trade off well worth it. Besides if you treat for heart worm your using ivermectin anyway. It is expensive, but well wort the cost to kill as many ticks as possible.

Love the idea of Ivermectin, but my kids rejected it out of hand, they came up with all sorts of objections (kids these days!). But seriously I'd really like any suggestions for a topical agent that discourages the little monsters (the ticks, not my kids). They are out there in serious numbers this year. I'd like to echo the Felczack request. Any suggestions short of napalm are acceptable.

If you are looking for something for your dogs then a simple drop of rose geranium essential oil mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond on the back of their neck each morning will do the trick.

I sprinkled some d.e. on my dogs' coats and rubbed it in a little, and sprinkled it on our porch. If it gets wet, though, it needs to be repplied. I've used ivermectin before, but there is a formula for the appropriate amount to give. I had a big dog at the time, and it was not 1cc. You might try google searching it. I've also heard of rose geranium essential oil, but have not tried that. I was also thinking I'd read about giving garlic to the dogs. My only concern with the garlic and the essential oil is, will that scent linger on them and make them a target for big predator types? Just a curiosity.....

Cedercide offers a concentrate to spray the area and a personal formula that works on humans and pets. It's a little pricey but we have been having great success as we trudge through the high grass, trying to fight the other foe...POISON IVEY!!!
