One trick that we use to keep birds and some critters away is the aluminum pie plates tied on string between 2 stakes and shiny spinny objects tied to the clothesline poles. For bugs, slugs & snails I use diatomaceous earth (DE). For other critters you need to put a fence around the garden but you need to bury about a foot to stop the ones that dig under. If the problem is deer good luck with that one about the only thing that will stop them is a 6 foot fence with another 2 feet of electric fence on top of that, anything lower than 8 feet and they can jump it like it's only 2 feet high.

We have used CDs.... Fencing for deer... Need two rows about 4 ft apart.

Check out my blog from this week here on Farm Dreams called "Flowers in the Garden"

I know how this sounds but… the best way to keep deer and all four legged creatures out of your garden is to PEE on it! Or rather to pee around it. Urine around the perimeter of the garden once or twice a week will keep just about anything away. I usually let the small male children in our family handle this chore but anybody can. We even have a groundhog who has taken up residence about 50ft away from our garden and he won’t come near it.

My husband built a fence around our garden.  We have chicken wire on  it and so far have not had too many problems with critters.  Bugs are another matter, especially this year.  I put those whirly things on the four corners to help keep birds out.  We have some nets to protect berry bushes and tomatoes when needed.  I should mention that our barn cat prowls in the garden, and our two big dogs are around alot, the Great Pyr in the nearby pasture at night.  I think our dogs help deter lots of critters.

There is a product called DeerOut that works very well for deer.  So if you have fruit trees or other plants outside of your fenced area spray it on the leaves.  It works, keeps the deer away and has a minty smell.  As for critters in the soil DE (diatomaceous earth) as preciously mentioned is your best friend.  Another product we have used for years with great success is a motion sensor sprinkler.  Its product name is "Scarecrow."  Because its not running all the time the critters dont have a chance to get used to it, like cd's, pie tins and the like.  Of course if you have a lot of deer a fence is probably your only real solution, but hsort of that the "Scarecrow" has worked wonders.  Because of it I have not had to fence.
