Does anyone have any advice for a future farmer on how to create a farm logo?  I have a good idea what I want, but have no idea how to create it on my own.  Paying for a graphic artist isn't in our family budget at this time unless there is a very affordable one out there.  To me it's important to have an image that reflect our farm and I feel like I'm getting nowhere trying to create it on my own.  Any advice will gratefully be accepted.

I'm of the opinion that your logo is a calling card and says a lot about you - I think something that looks authentic but 'professional' says bundles(it's also a bit tricky re-doing it if in the future you do find a budget for it). I think finding a way to get someone with that skill set involved early can pay dividends. What about checking in with a local college that runs a graphic design programme - you might be able to get a student to help you design something at really low cost?

Wendi-

This topic makes me smile.  I am the parent of one of those graphic design students.  I am hoping that our farm will be one of her senior portfolio projects next year.  The students at her school, design a visual corporate image- logos, packaging, car/truck decals, stationery, etc as part of a senior project  so it should work well for us.

As part of her degree program she has had coursework in logos and package design so maybe at a nearby college they have similar classes. check with the department chair or professor that teaches some of the classes. Maybe they even have similar senior portfolio projects. Maybe they could get you in touch with a student who would be happy to have some free lance work.

Creating a well designed "visual representation" of what you see your farm as (can you tell we have had lots of discussions about this?) takes time on the designer's part, so yes, I will pay my daughter. I think offering a flat fee for the design might work for both of you.   My daughter has done some freelance work on small projects for a lower fee , knowing that the work would benefit her portfolio/resume.

Thank you to both farm ladies who replied to my logo dilemma.  I hadn't thought about looking for a design student and that's a great idea.   I've been trying to put together our farm logo myself, but I'm beyond frustrated at my inability to operate my computer (I think I need a special program) and I'm just not finding the clip art/graphics I have in mind.  If I were paying myself for all the hours I've put towards this project I would have spent a fortune by now!

Another option to consider is sponsoring a logo design contest. There are many sites where you put up anywhere from $29 to $500 and sponsor a logo design contest. Aspiring graphic designers, and hobbyists, then attempt to create a design based on your criteria. You then choose the winner, and they get the money and you get the logo. They all offer a money back gurantee so if you don't like any of the entries, you don't have to pay.

Here's a couple of sites that do it:

UrbanFarmer,

I just wanted to let you know that I searched through all the websites that you pointed me to and after much consideration I decided to try out hatchwise.  I've just started the process and hopefully I will have a completed farm logo in the near future.  Now we just need to actually start our farm.  (Which WILL be soon!)

I'm very thankful for all the resources you sent my way.  Great suggestion.

You may want to peruse "Barn Quilts"  for some ideas.  I attended a Women in Ag conference recently, and saw them advertised....many farms incorporated their business ideas into their quilt designs.  Hope you find something that captures it all for you!  I added some links; scroll down on their pages until you see their designs.

My husband is an artist and while we were courting he drew me cartoons of our relationship, past, present and future.  We are a late in life couple...we married at 45 and 55 and we have both always been country people. He drew this picture on the envelope of a letter to me and then reproduced it as our logo. This is now cropped on our our business cards. One comment.....put exactly what it is you do on your card......I have seen many that are creative and adorable but give you no clue as to the persons business! Ours simply says "Farmers."

I love this! Thank you for making me smile.  We are just embarking on our farm dream adventure.  We've bought the land, mostly pasture, with no structures on it, not even a home.  But I've actually said out loud...I am a farmer....

You are blessed.

Do you know what sort of farming you're going to do, Wendi?  Or are you like us, and just have a blank slate waiting for a mark?

Lynn,

Our challenge is, I have so many ideas, or at least dreams of what I would like to see us do; but in actuality I don't have a clue how to really do any of it.  Really....I do just have a farm dream.  BUT if we could make this a reality, as a family, we will raise chickens, sheep, maybe some goats and cows, oh and after listening to Tim and Liz of Natures Harmony Farm, we may want to try some pigs.  I would like to have a pastured, grass fed operation. Then there are products to consider (can I even make anything?) I dream of inviting our local community to our farm, hosting farm tours and other events.  When I start thinking things like that; that's when I realize my dream is getting a little ahead of me and we really need to start building a home out there and just take one step at a time.  About that same time my oldest child will say something like "Mom, you could really make something of this farm"...and then the dream begins again.

Where are you at in your farm adventure?  I hope you'll share your story.  I feel a little silly for sharing my little tale.

Just a little update to this discussion.  Urban Farmer suggested several websites that work as a design competition for creating logos.  If you need a service like this please check out the websites he listed.  All of them are worth considering. I've had great success with the one I selected(hatchwise) and hope to have our farm logo in the next few days.

I have to say the first time I seen our farm name designed in an actual logo, especially since the artist captured so much of what I had in mind, it was thrilling.  Thank you everyone for posting to this discussion.
